This visualization shows the gravitational lensing of light as it passes through a cluster of several hundred galaxies. The cluster is embedded in an invisible halo of dark matter, which, by its gravity, holds the cluster together and distorts the images of several background galaxies. Without the mass of the dark matter, the cluster would dissolve and the lensing effect would drastically diminish.
